Your Success Starts from your Goals- Part 4

Your Success Starts from your Goals- Part 4

Why setting goals is important to your life?

Goal setting is used by top-level athletes, successful business-people and achievers in all fields. Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. It focuses your acquisition of knowledge, and helps you to organize your time and your resources so that you can make the very most of your life.

By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals, and you’ll see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. You will also raise your self-confidence, as you recognize your own ability and competence in achieving the goals that you’ve set.

Starting to Set Personal Goals
You set your goals on a number of levels:

  • First you create your “big picture” of what you want to do with your life (or over, say, the next 10 years), and identify the large-scale goals that you want to achieve.
  • Then, you break these down into the smaller and smaller targets that you must hit to reach your lifetime goals.
  • Finally, once you have your plan, you start working on it to achieve these goals.

This is why we start the process of goal setting by looking at your lifetime goals. Then, we work down to the things that you can do in, say, the next five years, then next year, next month, next week, and today, to start moving towards them.

Step 1: Setting Lifetime Goals
The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime (or at least, by a significant and distant age in the future). Setting lifetime goals gives you the overall perspective that shapes all other aspects of your decision making. To give a broad, balanced coverage of all important areas in your life, try to set goals in some of the following categories (or in other categories of your own, where these are important to you):

  • Family- Do you want to be a parent? If so, how are you expect to be a good parent? How do you want to be seen by a partner or by members of your extended family? How do you expect your parental skills influent the future of your children?
  • Career- what level do you want to reach in your career, or what do you want to achieve?
  • Financial- How much do you want to earn, by what stage? How is this related to your career goals?
  • Self Development- Is there any knowledge you want to acquire in particular? What information and skills will you need to have in order to achieve other goals?
  • Attitude- Is any part of your mindset holding you back? Is there any part of the way that you behave that upsets you? (If so, set a goal to improve your behavior or find a solution to the problem.)
  • Physical – Are there any physical goals that you want to achieve, or do you want good health deep into old age? What steps are you going to take to achieve this?
  • Pleasure – How do you want to enjoy yourself? (You should ensure that some of your life is for you!)
  • Public Service – Do you want to make the world or your community a better place? If so how?

Spend some time brainstorming these things, and then select one or more goals in each category that best reflect what you want to do. Then consider trimming again so that you have a small number of really significant goals that you can focus on.

As you do this, make sure that the goals that you have set are ones that you genuinely want to achieve, not ones that your parents, family, or employers might want. (If you have a partner, you probably want to consider what he or she wants – – however, make sure that you also remain true to yourself!)g2

Step 2: Setting Smaller Goals, Plans and To-Do-List

Once you have set your lifetime goals, set a five-year plan of smaller goals that you need to complete if you are to reach your lifetime plan.

Then create a one-year plan, six-month plan, and a one-month plan of progressively smaller goals that you should reach to achieve your lifetime goals. Each of these should be based on the previous plan.

Then create a daily To-Do List of things that you should do today to work towards your lifetime goals.

At an early stage, your smaller goals might be to read books and gather information on the achievement of your higher level goals. This will help you to improve the quality and realism of your goal setting.

Finally review your plans, and make sure that they fit the way in which you want to live your life.

A Modern example of personal values

A modern proponent of values would be prominent business man Bill Gates. His early goal resulting from his values was for every home to own a PC and I think it is fair to say he achieved that in bucket loads. In the past decade he and his wife have set about giving away much of his wealth through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the world’s largest transparently operated charitable foundation in the world. So he and his wife clearly have another core value to help others less fortunate than themselves. The important thing about this is that all people of import and achievement know very clearly what their values are and have a very clear and concise relationship between their core values and their goals.

succesDiscover your core values

How do you discover your core values? The process I am going to share with you is something that you can use to do this for yourself. First get a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. Next, using one or maximum two words write down as many things that you think are important in your life as you can think of. For example, money, family, business, helping others, love, e.t.c.. Keep going until at least 5 minutes have passed and you can think of no more. Now, go through the list and remove the ones that are similar in nature and replace with just one word to describe the duplicates.

Make a new list of the values that remain on a fresh piece of paper. Finally, with the new list, imagine you have only 24hrs left on planet earth and you have been granted a wish with a condition. The wish is you can choose any value from the list that you want to be remembered for after you are dead and everyone who knows you will think of this when they think of you. What would you choose from the list in front of you? The condition is that you only have one minute to choose. After have chosen put the number 1 next to that item. Now cover that item up with a strip of paper so it does not distract you (or make a new list) and repeat the process with the remainder of the list. Do this until you have the top 5 values. These are your values. The top three of these are your CORE values.

Yet, there are few ideals as difficult to grasp as that of happiness. In our daily life we constantly experience happiness and unhappiness, but we are still quite ignorant as to what happiness really is.

What do you value in life?

Values are things, people, places and events that are most important to you in life. Every person has different values and you have to at first find out what the values are for you, because values bring you the most fulfillment and joy. When you are not in harmony with your values, you are not happy and you feel your life is meaningless. The more in harmony your behavior is with your values, the more fulfilled and happy you are. This is a simple formula and it works for everyone.valuesss

Values are important, because when you know what is primary to you in your life you can set up your life in harmony with them, which brings you fulfillment. The important thing is to know what your values are, what these values mean to you and how they affect your life. Because the more you prioritize what you value, the more your life is filled with joy and gratitude.

You will be unhappy when you are out of harmony with your values.

When you are out of harmony with your values you will be unhappy and dissatisfied, because your priorities are not correct. You live how you do not want to live. You actcontrary to your desire. You will always feel like you are missing something. You will always be chasing after something and never will be able to find it. This way of thinking can delay your happiness for quite a while. When you do not live with your values you will regret and have to live with that regret your entire life.
